Grotta del Trullo (Trullo’s Cave)

Putignano’s caves are the first tourist location in Apulia, where visitors have the possibility to immerse in a hidden place, admiring what nature has drawn over the centuries.

Grotta del trullo (“Trullo’s Cave”), with its 75 years of tourism, represents a symbol for Apulia and Italy. It was the first tourist location opened to public in Apulia and one of the first caves opened to public in Italy. But, apart from its historical charm, this Cave also impresses tourists with the beauty of its alabaster concretions and its calcareous soil inflorescences.

Also its speleological area (not accessible to public) is very charming with its 20 metres long tunnel, which goes down deeply in the ground, disclosing other wonderful creations of hypogean nature.

Putignano’s caves are the first tourist location in Apulia, where visitors have the possibility to immerse in a hidden place, admiring what nature has drawn over the centuries.
From the historical documents, we gather that the tourist flow was so huge that it was decided in 1934 to build a “modest building” on the square near to the staircase leading to the caves. This building is considered indispensable for giving the visitor “a bit of rest or relief”.
So they started the building of Trulli, which went well with the caves, because both are symbols of the region. Because of their presence, “Grotta del Trullo” is called the Putignano’s underground treasure.

The enclosed and enlightened park of “Grotta del Trullo”, is also a camper parking area. The “camper service” is not yet active. For the moment, only the water supply system is available.

Next to the “Grotta del Trullo” there is a large well-equipped and enclosed green park.
Among the services present in the park, there are facilities for families, such as picnic tables in the shade of trees and merry-go-rounds for children.

For sportsmen and sportswomen there are the following facilities: a bowling ground in the pine forest, tennis courts and an all-purpose open space equipable as a football pitch or basketball court. Instead, for green lovers, there are relaxing walks within the pine, oaks and olive trees forest.
